What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been referred to over the years as autism or considered to be a variety of separate diagnoses like Asperger’s Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder. Today, we understand that individuals diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum experience a range of symptoms such as difficulty with social interactions, nonverbal or verbal language deficits, and reciprocal communication delays, which are all related to early neurodevelopment.

The ASD Testing Process

At the time of the assessment, we’ll ask you to come into the office to discuss your child’s developmental history and your concerns.  We will then create a personalized testing battery for your child which will usually include a combination of diagnostic interviews and observation as well as more traditional testing and the use of ASD rating scales.

After your child’s assessment is completed, we’ll compile the information into a report and send it to you to review. Then, we’ll come back together to discuss the report. During this follow up session, we’ll review the documentation and answer your questions. We will discuss plans for ongoing treatment to maximize your child’s strengths and thrive in all areas of their lives.

Frequently Asked Questions About Evaluation Services

Will my child be judged if they are labeled as “autistic?”

There’s no way of knowing how other people will react to an ASD diagnosis. However, we encourage parents to remember that the results of our assessments are confidential. You may need to share some of the information with a physician or educators, but otherwise, it is up to you and your child who knows about their results.
