Attention-deficit disorder (ADD) and Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are both names for a condition that impacts an individual’s control over their executive functions. In most cases, we now refer to the condition as ADHD because it encompasses more of the characteristics of the condition. ADHD is usually further classified as one of three types: impulsive/hyperactive, inattentive/distractible, or combined.

Kids or adults who have trouble paying attention at school or work, become distracted by completing tasks at home, or can’t seem to remember important deadlines, may be dealing with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. While it may seem like just a little too much energy in young children, over time, this struggle to control executive functions can negatively impact an individual’s academic, personal, and professional life.

Who Needs an ADHD Evaluation?
Children and adults alike can be diagnosed with ADHD. Although many people, especially young children, will exhibit warning signs at some point throughout their lives, it does not necessarily mean they will receive a diagnosis of ADHD as there may be other factors contributing to these behaviors. It is important that an ADHD evaluation investigate multiple areas of the individual’s functioning to determine the main cause of the behavior. An assessment would be beneficial if you or your child exhibit the following symptoms:
- Excessive energy, hyperactive, restless, fidgety, talking excessively
- Difficulty paying attention across multiple settings (school, home, and/or work)
- Impulsive
- Trouble staying on task and following through with homework or work assignments
The ADHD Testing Process
Before we begin testing, we’ll meet with you and your child or you as an adult to discuss your concerns and review pertinent developmental history. The assessment for ADHD will involve the individual completing a specific computerized ADHD test that evaluates a person’s attention to detail and their ability to remain focused during a task. We will also administer a cognitive assessment, interview and observe the client, and have the parent or significant other complete a behavior rating scale. Once we’ve completed the assessments, we compile all of the information into a report that you can review before scheduling a follow up visit.

Is ADHD real, or is my child just being a child?
