Special Education Consultations
Special education consultations are meant to help parents ensure their child is receiving the right academic resources. For example, if your child has been approved to receive special education accommodations, you may need some help sorting through all the options and information that comes at you from the school district. You may also want to schedule a special education consultation if you feel your child’s academic resources are not providing adequate support.

Individualized Education Program (IEP) Consultations
Individualized education programs (IEPs) are the written, legal documents that lay out the school district’s planned special education curriculum for your child. While these documents are meant to be beneficial for parents and students, offering clarity and accountability for special education provisions, many people find the jargon and legalese a little difficult to understand. We can help you interpret what your child’s IEP says, and if necessary, help you and your child take steps to adjust these plans.
Preparation for 504 Plan Meetings
Similar to the IEP, the 504 plan is your school’s documentation of the accommodations they plan to provide that are not related to the special education curriculum. This may include like such as allowing students to test in quiet areas rather than in the regular classroom setting. 504 plans can also be used to ensure students who have physical or developmental barriers to academic success have everything they need to successfully complete academic tasks.

Independent Educational Evaluations (IEE)
After receiving the report from your child or teen’s school district following psychoeducational/educational assessment, you may want to schedule a consultation to discuss the findings and how they impact your child’s access to necessary academic resources. These reports can be very complex, especially if you don’t look at them often. We can help you better understand the findings and implications.
In addition to consultations to discuss the results of the school’s assessments, you may want to work with our team to conduct an Independent Education Evaluation (IEE). If you decide that you disagree with all or part of the school district’s assessment, you may want to schedule an IEE with Mind Works Psychologists. The following steps may be taken to request that an IEE be completed:
Parents must:
- Contact the Director of Special Education in writing requesting an IEE.
- Request an IEE as soon as possible following the school district evaluation in question.
- Specify areas of disagreement with the school district evaluation, and list assessment questions to be addressed in the IEE.
- Inform the school district that you have selected Mind Works Psychologists to conduct the IEE.
If approved by the school district a contract will be signed between the district and the Mind Works Psychologists provider. We will then contact the parents to schedule the evaluation appointment.
Intervention Meetings
Intervention meetings are the school’s way of periodically assessing the success of educational and environmental accommodations they provide for learners. The goal of these meetings is to ensure that the student is continuing to receive the appropriate resources to achieve their academic goals. We can attend intervention meetings as advocates for parents and students, and we can help you review the documentation and reports associated with intervention meetings.

Evaluation Follow Up & Support
After you receive the results of your child’s evaluations with our psychologists, you may need extra support in determining what to do next. We can schedule a consultation meeting to go over review the reports again and provide more detailed recommendations for academic resources, therapies, and other support services that will help your child achieve their goals and address any concerns uncovered in the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions About School Consultations
Why should I visit Mind Works Psychologists for career/goal oriented consultation?
We have experience and enjoy working with clients who are just beginning careers or starting to explore their career options. We help clients explore their career options, set professional goals, and navigate this often difficult life transition. As necessary, we may recommend career assessments and aptitude testing to help the young person find areas they may excel. Following the consultation and/or assessment, we can also offer therapy services to help young people build career momentum, develop skills that will serve them within a chosen profession, and maintain motivation.
Aren’t some of these consultation services offered by the school system?
Your child’s educators and school administrators will take the time to discuss their special education plans with you, but parents aren’t always as knowledgeable or experienced as the school administrators. They find themselves feeling a little overwhelmed by all of the information and jargon coming their way. It may be less stressful to have someone in your corner who can help you sort through all of the complex information related to special education and accommodations that you’ll hear from the school district.
Why would I need help preparing for meetings with my child’s educators and administrators?
We all go into a child’s special education and accommodations meeting hopeful that the school will be able to provide everything the child needs to be successful, and for the most part, school systems do their best to deliver just that. However, when you don’t work in special education programming every day, it can be hard to know what the best resources for your child are. By working with one of our psychologists to prepare for these meetings and review documentation following special education meetings, you can feel confident your child will receive the best solutions.
Can you come to the meetings with me?
In some cases, one of our psychologists will be able to attend meetings with you. We can discuss these options as they apply to your specific situation, so please contact us for details.
